Sputnik was orbited in 1957 - a few things have changed since then. One wonders what computers would be like and if we would have an Internet if the cold war atmosphere of fearful competition didn't exist back then. It is amazing what you can do when you focus a not-insignificant part of the economy on a task.

The American Memory at the Library of Congress is a great beginning for a digital library. We've been here before, but it continues to grow (largely with a few massive private grants) and may well point to the future.
This is wonderful stuff. Bookmark it and spend some time wandering around.
