Microsoft is telling a skeptical public that there are limits on what Palladium will enforce and that all of this is in the best interest of the public (trust us). As it happens a few patents have been filed by other parties to test that position. My guess is that Microsoft already has applications in the background that will cover their bets, but this is a clever attempt at keeping a less than trustworthy company to its word.

Of course Microsoft still seems to be supporting strong DRM to protect the rights of Hollywood and the major record companies as defined by Hollywood and the major record companies. Vote with your feet if this disturbs you. Living in a post Microsoft world may not be the terrible experience that Microsoft might lead you to believe.

Measuring the dimensions of the mass at the center of the Milky Way is a very tricky undertaking. A recent publication details a study on the motions of stars near the center of the galaxy (very near!) yielding a volume upper limit suggestive of a black hole. The movie at the top of the page is incredible!

Take a look at this page

if you've had a bit of physics and want to brush up on orbits in strongly curved spacetime.

Halloween is nearly here and, with the demise of door to door trick-or-treating, we are seeing the emergence of holiday experiences. Semi-professional haunted yards seem to be getting more popular.

I've spent a few days in the NY City Public Library browsing their historical pictures section. What a delight to find that it is being digitized and moved online.

They seem to be focused more on browsing rather than serious study, but that is probably fine for the majority of potential users.
