Unfortunately switching them on and off reduces their life and some of the cheaper - er - cost sensitive laptops have been experiencing failures after one to two years of use. The brave can attempt to replace tubes on their own, although I have heard of at least one horror story. It seems that a huge technology company in the area decided to perform in-house repair on dead laptop screens in an effort to save money (said technology company is not doing well these days). An unnamed reader of this list notes that about 50% of the repairs were successful and gives a link of a good supply of small fluorescent tubes. http://jkllamps.com/laptop.html He notes: "Gateway and HP laptops are particularly bad when it comes to cheap lamps and IBM is at the other end of the scale.
