Brobeck, Phleger and Harrison is in the process of collapsing - another indication of the dotcom bust. Things must be bad when lawyers are being shown the door (although there probably isn't a huge amount of sympathy).

I was puzzeled by the expensive network TV ads Brobeck ran in recent months. It didn't seem like an efficient mechanism to hit their target audience.

UCLA has published their third Internet report.

Fascinating stuff -- I haven't read the entire report, but it is consistent with other studies that suggest further expansion of the user base will be slow and that Internet use tends to displace TV use.

If this type of study interests you there are serveral others that ask similar questions ... the Pew Internet and American Life Project is among the best. A more academic view is found at First Monday which addresses a wider range of issues. All of these are wonderful resources.

As we approach the next huge reality TV event (Desert Storm 1.1 in a few weeks) it will be interesting to see where people find information as censorship was the hallmark of Desert Storm 1.0.

Perhaps you can create the next Wallace and Gromit.

Perhaps not, but a kid armed with the family firewire video camera and a bit of software could spend quite a bit of time trying.

Griffin has just released a major update to Final Vinyl. Just the ticket for moving your old LPs and tapes into your OS X Macintosh with nifty improvements over the beta.

We have talked about the President's State of the Union notes on research itowards an automotive hydrogen economy. This is a long way off and, I'm afraid, is part of his tactic of tabling important issues by studying them (check out global warming as an example).

In the short term the deduction for buying an SUV goes up dramatically under another Bush proposal... Note that to get the deduction, the vehicle has to be grossly overweight. I guess there is nothing as sweet as increasing our dependence on oil and fleecing the taxpayer at the same time.

You may want to ring up your congressperson and ask where they stand on the SUV loophole... A bit of checking shows the Barbara Boxer of California introduced a bill on January 30 that would close the loophole.
