Lessons Relearned
I spent a good deal of time today working in the UEN Network Operating Center. It was fun. Kelly, Patrick, Troy, Wes, Steve, Paul and I all took turns working on different issues. Of course, as a manager I spent most of my time observing. Still, there were times that I was able to contribute.
I won't take time to outline all of our activities. Next week I plan to do that. Today I just wanted to review a few age old Management lessons.
- Working together is much more effective, and enjoyable, than working alone.
- It's better to have too much to do than not enough.
- Managers need to spend "quality" and "quantity" time with the team.
- Leadership by example is always the best.
- There is never any such thing as too much help.
- Spending time in the NOC is more enjoyable than most of what I have to do every day.
- If I spend too much time in the NOC other critical parts of my job will suffer.
- Even though answering the phone is important, it is not the most critical responsibility of the NOC.
I really need the NOC management to take what was done this week and expand on it. We need more management and more teamwork in our Network Operating Center. Nothing will compensate for too little management influence in that environment. I look forward to the immediate future and the opportunity for us to improve our performance.........
