Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

NOC - Technical Competence

There are a few key ideas about technical competence. And just for clarification, these principles apply to every area at UEN, not just the NOC.

Following are those key ideas:

1. Potential

Potential is the idea that an organization needs good people. Hire the best.

2. Resources

What more can be said? Good tools, good working environment. It does no good to hire the best people if you don't keep them around.

3. Training

This takes a big commitment, both in terms of money and time. Don't neglect this important part of being competent.

4. Leadership/Management

Managers are the key. We must set clear expectations, follow-up, provide resources & training and listen. We must also spend time working right along with the staff. If managers are considered to be arrogant and/or uncaring then the staff will not respond favorably. It's easy to understand, difficult to do.

So, how do managers provide leadership? Well, let's talk about that tomorrow.........
