NOC - Relationship to Engineering
How do Operations and Engineering coexist? This may be more a matter of resources than anything else. I really like the way the MOREnet does it. I had the chance to talk with Chip, MOREnet Operations Manager, a couple of months ago.
Chip told me that all immediate needs for engineering are handled in the operations group. A handful of engineers are imbedded in operations. There is a separate engineering team and they take care of issues that are beyond an 18 month window. This gets engineering out of the operations picture. It also frees engineering to take a long term view of their work. Engineering is responsible, in the MOREnet culture, for setting standards, testing ideas, and monitoring the current network configuration for compliance.
I would like to move UEN to this model. But the reality is that it would take a few more bodies to make this a reality. Until then it will be necessary for us to work from a modified method. Here are some guidelines for making this work with the resources we have:
Operations is the Engineering Department's biggest customer. Treat them like it.
Success is measured in how well we help each other.
Everyone is busy. Everyone.
Nothing is gained through blame.
Getting the job done is more important than who gets the job done.
Working out the relationship between Operations and Engineering is critical to the success of any organization. Acknowledging that we are all overburdened is a great starting place. Looking out for each other is where we want to be..........
