Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Gilligan's Island

What's up with life in the United States? I keep hearing about results of Polls. How the Egyptians are mad about what we are doing in Iraq. How Australians don't approve of how we handle the United Nations. etc. etc. etc.

I suppose it all started a few years ago when William Jefferson occupied the oval office. He seemed to run the country based on polls about popular opinion. Sort of like asking the question, "What do you think?" Followed up by the reply, "Then that's what I think." Over and over and over again.

Polling has been around for a long time. But only recently has it been raised to the level of actually running the country based on them.

It makes Clinton the modern day leadership equivalent of Gilligan. You remember him, don't you? You're right professor. And you're right, Skipper. And your right, Mr. Howell. Yes, Gilligan never had an opinion of his own. Just like Bill. And just like all of the other politicians and news reporters that follow in his distinguished wake.
