Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Vendor Partnerships

There is altogether to much made about vendor partnerships. Mostly by the vendors. When a vendor brings out the "partnership" discussion I hear: "Buy my stuff, it doesn't really matter if it works for you." Vendor partnerships scare me.

A few years ago Garth approached me about defining a partnership. We developed an outline that I've used ever since. Here are the four aspects of a partnership, from my perspective:

  • Know more about my network than I do.

  • Don't bring me whistles and bells. I don't need them. I don't have time to figure out how to use them in my network. Bring me solutions.

  • Sell my needs to your company.

  • Make room for other vendors. There is a big pie and you only get a portion of it.

There it is. Simple and to the point. Follow these rules if you want to be my partner........
