Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

More thoughts on Balance

Ever since I first wrote about balance in my blog I've thought about it often. I believe that balance is important. Of course, it's only a good idea until you do something about it.

I've also talked to many people about this concept of balance. It seems that many of us are struggling to balance the demands of our work with the needs of family, personal interests, community responsibilities, etc. etc. Too many competing interests to mention all of them. For sure we all share many of these demands. Just thinking about all we should be doing causes huge amounts of stress. Actually getting to all of it is something else again.

Today I was determined to make sure I had some play time. I scheduled a tee time for 1:20 PM. My Dad and brothers were going to meet me at the course. My morning time was committed to tile setting at my daughter's home in Kaysville. By 12:00 Noon I was going to be at the course getting lunch and warming up. No such luck.

Tiling took much more time than I'd planned. Underestimating project time happens often. So I was feeling a bit of stress just realizing that leaving early would put me behind schedule for finishing the bathroom. And just as it was getting close to my tee time it started raining. I called my Dad. He was already at the course. As we were speculating about the chances of golfing today the rain turned to snow. So much for golf.

I stayed until about 3:00 and finished the job. That was good. Then I headed for home and a walk with my dogs. Somewhere after 30 minutes of walking I realized that, even though setting tiles is hard work, it does represent some balance in my life. Working with my hands is different than what I do every day at UEN. It gives me satisfaction. Not only can I plan the work, I get the pleasure of getting my hands dirty and seeing all of the planning end in a finished product. Way cool.

Balance comes in many forms. It's all just academic until we change our behavior. Balancing life takes effort. As I see it, balance is working at life. Too many times I just want to coast.

That's all for now.........
