Nake-id before the world
Just when you start to think you know something...Want to know how little you know? Teach something.
Last night I gave the gauge lecture. And as I was gassing on about the difference between rows and stitches and how to swatch and why a "finished 36-inch bust measurement" has nothing to do with your breasts. And how your bra size has nothing to do with your breasts. And how you have to measure and count and calculate, I got myself all in a twist. You start to realize, this stuff is hard. When you pick all the pieces apart--gauge, ease, yarn and pattern selection--knitting seems really daunting. God, I'm glad I learned before I was too old too know better.
Then (this is the really embarrassing part) as I was helping a student calculate a gauge in garter stitch, I realized I had no clue how to count the stitches. Do you count the up and down bumps or do you count just the ups or just the downs? Happily Susie was there to rescue me. For those of you dying for the answer: You count just the ups or just the downs.
I want to pull a blanket over my head and hide.
