Body conscious
Body image: Got a theory to try out on y'all. I think knitting improves one's body image. By designing knits or tweaking patterns to fit one's own shape, we must objectify our bods. There's none of this: "Oh, normally I wear a size 8." Or "These are my `fat' jeans." We knit to our measurements. It is what it is. I think this objectification creates a nice distance between our expectations for our physiques and what's really there. No mystery, no disappointment.
Also, by using our own figures as dress forms, we learn what's lovely about ourselves as well as what's not so lovely. I may have arms like a Russian peasant, but my waist is nice; or, my shoulders are narrow little knobs, but I have a great...you get the idea. We come to the same place long-time lovers do--partners who know each other's strengths and failings and through that knowing become more compassionate and loving; likewise through understanding, we become more intimate with our bodies and kinder to them.
Dressing ourselves in the very specific way we do, we learn what works--boatnecks yes, scoop necks no--and what doesn't--super bulky yarn rib-knit. As a result our sweaters--and our little selves--look better and we feel like perky sexy thangs.
Am I wrong here?
