Confession time
Geek speak: I wear a pedometer. That's right, a little device clipped to the waistband of my pants that counts every step I take. (Given that I just downed a matzoh ball the size of an ostrich egg , we're delighted it doesn't count calories and then talk back.) The pedometer is the featured element of America on the Move, a national initiative to encourage healthy living.
The idea is this--The AOM folks say, you can curtail weight gain by taking 2,000 extra steps a day and eliminating 100 calories. Sensible, no?
Why write about this on a knitting blog? In case you haven't noticed--and, granted it's easy to forget--knitting is a largely sedentary activity. Couple that with blogging, working at home with cats lolling on your lap, a bit of reading and possibly a nap, well, eventually one has to admit that the meat might need a little moving of an eve.
Plus, summer approacheth and this knitter finds herself in the uneviable position of having to don a bathing suit in the company of her in-laws come July. So yeah I wear a pedometer, want to make something of it?
I find I quite like the little gizmo. I examine it constantly. Walk from car to Safeway. Check steps. Walk from car to Costco. Check steps. Walk from car to LYS. Check steps. Chase cats. Check steps. Hide yarn. Check steps. Yell at husband in basement. Check steps. It does tend to foster obsessive behavior. But we know all about that, don't we?
Yesterday, I ambled over to the used bookstore nearby before readying our seder--upped my steps to 8,000. Feeling quite studly.
Speaking of walking: Have you seen what's doin' over at Hairball's site? She's gathering knitters for the April 25 women's march on Washington for reproductive rights and even launched a web site www.knittersagainstbush.com. And check out the t-shirts (proceeds go to NARAL and moveon.org)!
