The Idiot
I-cord edging: While Tiffany fiddled with those beautiful darts she devised for the Audrey, I decided to broach my fear of finishing and tackle the Must Have. Because I'm totally copying Rachael and zippering this baby shut, I decided to add an I-cord edging in lieu of a 2x2 ribbing. Remembering that Bonne Marie had posted applied I-cord instructions, I hie tailed it over there, read them, then promptly blocked it. So by the time I started digging my double points into the front-edge of the Must Have, I was lost. And too lazy to reboot my computer. (Best argument for a Blackberry I've run across.)
Bother, I thought. ("Bother" actually wasn't what I thought. In reality, my invective was much more colorful. But we can't be flinging the eff-word about willy nilly, otherwise it looses its very special zing.) Riffling through my various knitting references--Vogue Knitting had nothing. Stitch and Bitch, nada. Nicky Epstein said, knit the I-cord then backstitch it on. Bother. Then I turned to the new Knitting in the Old Way. Ta da!
Here's what you do: CO 3 sts onto a double-pointed needle. K2, sl1 and slide to the other end without turning. (now here's the tricky part.) With your left needle (and right side of garment/I-cord facing you) pick up and knit a stitch from the edge of your piece. Pass slipped stitch over picked up stitch. Repeat.
My mother also swears by this button hole--also from KIOW.
Knit to where you want BH. Bring yarn forward, slip l stitch to rt. needle.
take yarn back and drop. Take another stitch to rt needle and slip first stitch over 2nd. Bind off in this manner # of stitches needed for size of BH you want. Change last stitch from rt needle to left needle and turn work.
Cast on (cable cast on) number of stitches you have slipped PLUS ONE. Turn work to front. Put yarn forward. put first stitch on left needle to right needle and pass last cast on stitch over this stitch.
Return yarn to back of work and continue.
Have a great weekend!
