Download for Free [posted by ZelderGoul] Due to a mistake and a technicality, you can download he 1968 George Romero's classic The Night of the Living Dead for free at archive.com. This film is known as a turning point in the area of splatter films, but this is so much more than your typical horror movie. In the words of scholar Kevin Heffernan, "...many critics have praised Night of the Living Dead for introducing a particularly sophisticated form of bleak social commentary into the low-budget horror film" (Cinema Journal Spring 2002). Casting an African-American male lead (Duane Jones) with a white female lead (Judith O'Dea) was a risk and Romero purposely included many subtle references to race relations in the U.S. If you haven't seen the film for a while, it might be time to see it again. Two thumbs up.

Social Identity and The Vikings [Posted by Troy] Last evening, Kim & I drove out to Romeoville and had dinner with some old friends from Cambridge (Nathan, Heather, Ella, Carter, Justin, & Erin for those of you keeping score). We both enjoyed it quite a bit, and it was nice to see the two new babies (no pictures, sorry). I hope to see these guys sometime soon.

A Short History of April Fool's Day [posted by ZelderLibrarian] According to this post on my library's blog, April Fool's Day originated in 1582 when France shifted to the Gregorian Calendar, which moved the new year from April 1 to January 1. The NY Times actually lists 1564 as the year that France shifted from the Jullian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. None-the-less, the people who continued to celebrate the new year as April 1 were called April fools. I am continually fascinated by our use of calendrics and our continual struggle to make this systematic method for marking time match nature. Somewhere in human nature is our desire to force order on chaos.

Anyway, the bottom line is that Kim & I are not married. Josh was the first to bust us with our first post. He gets a blue ribbon. Sorry if we freaked anyone out (Mom & Sandy Wirth)!
