All things considered, my last day (Yesterday--Friday) with Roehl Transportation went fine.
I dropped my trailer off in Indianapolis, IN and then high-tailed it to Gary, IN so that I wouldn't run out-of-hours (due to my split-logging from the previous day).
I let my wife know that I was heading towards Gary and she promptly took off from Milwaukee, WI to meet me at a truck stop in Gary (she arrived about 15-minutes after I did). I removed my belongings, loaded them into the car, and she followed me to the terminal in Gary. Once there, she needed to wait outside of the gated compound (since she wasn't an employee, she wasn't allowed into the gated area) while I parked the truck and then let myself out via my key card and off we went towards home. We even missed Chicago rush hour -- sweet!
In hindsight, Roehl probably wanted to go through some sort of a debriefing--what I liked and didn't like about the company, etc., but I just wanted to get out of there. To be honest, I was keenly disappointed in the way the planners and my fleet manager handled me in getting me back home. Even though I would have liked to believe they would make it happen in a way that's beneficial to both the company and myself this time around, my experience indicated not to really count on it. The saying "Fool me once, shame on me; fool me twice shame on you" comes to mind. They had fooled me one to many times for me to really trust them to what they said they would do (would it kill them to say it ain't gonna happen the way we said it would?). One would think that they would be grateful to all employees--whether on a shorter or longer-term basis--who have helped them succeed in the marketplace. That mindset would reflect on the way all employees treat one another from the first day to the last day. Well this driver had to go to "Plan B" and make it happen in spite of the planners/fleet manager's best intentions on his last two days with the company to ensure that his last day with the company was really his last day. Heck, knowing what I know now, I should have said my last day was Thursday--even Wednesday. That way my last day with the company for sure would have been Friday (grin).
On the way home, I left a message for Mr. K (my ex-fleet manager) that the truck was parked in the yard and that I'd be mailing my fuel cards and gate pass to Human Resources on Monday. I also thanked him for assisting me in my driving assignments and wished him the best at Roehl.
On Monday I begin training at my new company in Chicago. Stay tuned!
miles driven = 320
PostScript: Had a wonderful time tobogganing and sledding with my family and another family in the late afternoon/evening. Afterwards, we enjoyed pizza, talked, and watched Shrek2. I am so glad I didn't decide to wait until getting home on Saturday. I would have missed a great time with family and friends!
