Today's training was spent mostly in the computer class room. Mr. J (the main instructor leading all of us) did another great job at leading us all through orientation today via videos, slides presentations, and lectures. In the afternoon, Mr. H led us through a good interactive session on the Smith System of Defensive Driving. At 4:00 PM we were done for the day. One more day to go!
So far my overall impression of this company is a good one. The company promotes from within, and if the company keeps growing as it has been, there will be plenty of jobs--driving and non-driving jobs--for the foreseeable future. All of the instructors have been former drivers with the company so they can totally relate with what OTR (Over-The-Road) drivers deal with on a day-to-day basis.
I'm also impressed with the way the company genuinely seems to trust their drivers in areas I haven't experienced in my driving career--recently as well as years ago. I won't elaborate more on that for the moment, but I'm pleased with what I'm seeing and hearing. In addition, us drivers are getting the chance to interact a bit during breaks, lunch, etc., and we're enjoying our orientation time. Not only that, but we all seem to be fairly intelligent as far as drivers go (if I may be so brash in saying so). That's a good thing for the company since it reflects on the quality of drivers they are hiring.
My roommate (Mr. D) and I have gotten along well. He'll be staying one extra day for his orientation (all the long-haul OTR drivers will) and I'll be taking off tomorrow after finalizing all the administrative details. I may be assigned a tractor Thursday or Friday. If so, the company will rent a car for me and I'll drive to the location where it's at if it is outside of Milwaukee. I'm assuming I'll be driving starting next Monday.
