2004 Presidential Election
The Rocky is running short editorial on Liberia. One line saying that the bloodshed has some " U.S. liberals such as presidential candidate Howard Dean are begging the United States to lead a peacekeeping force capable of enforcing a cease-fire." has me dazed and confused. I did a quick search of the Rocky and Dean's website and cannot find any reference to Dean advocating American troops in Liberia.
Update: Here's a link to Howard on Liberia from Rush Limbaugh and from the SFGate.com. Thanks to Dave Cullen and SunSpot.net for the links.
I'm not a Dean supporter. I haven't aligned behind a candidate yet, although I have to say that I like a candidate that'll worry both the Democratic and Republican leadership.
Moving on. Two things struck me over the weekend as I started assembling website information and signing up for e-mail from the presidential candidates. First, as I stated in the reasoning behind the Gulchie awards, " Don't assume that people that sign up for e-mail information are automatically supporters of your campaign." President Bush's website breaks that rule. They want you to volunteer in order to receive campaign news. I'm a long way from volunteering in his campaign, and the message I get is that they don't even want to try to win me over if I'm not already on their side. I guess that's what a 60+% approval rating'll do for you.
Other candidate e-mail lists have not sent a confirming e-mail to the Gulch. It's no wonder that Kerry and Dean lead the list of democrats in donations. So far their campaigns have the most complete and organized web presence.
The second issue is search. Today when I tried to find info on Liberia on Dean's website I couldn't find a search functiion. So here's a plea to all the presidential campaigns to give us search. The number of issues in a presidential election is huge and you need to provide a way into the mind of your candidate without expecting the surfer to click on each possible link on your website. The tool would be valuable to bloggers and the proffesional press also. For example, the Rocky Editorial Staff could have done a quick fact check on their editorial from yesterday and I could have verified the accuracy of the comment without relying on my middle-aged memory.
