2003 Denver Mayoral Transition
The Mayor is proposing a series of economic summits to develop an regional and city economic strategy says the Rocky Mountain News [July 24, 2003, "New mayor plans series of economic summits"]. From the article, "First on the agenda is a marketing summit. Next on the agenda will be a "regionwide economic development summit," Hickenlooper said. He noted that creating jobs in Aurora and Lakewood and other suburbs ultimately benefits Denver. The third summit will focus exclusively on downtown Denver."
Mayor Hickenlooper is proposing sweeping changes to the Career Service Authority says the Rocky Mountain News [July 24, 2003, "Mayor seeks leeway on city workers' pay"]. This type of change requires a charter amendment that must be passed by the voters of the City and County. Timing is crucial since the changes must be approved through council during August to get the charter changes on the ballot in November. From the article, "The mayor's changes, which he wants to accomplish with an amendment to the City Charter, would essentially strip the Career Service Authority's mission to its bare bones. They also could eventually allow Hickenlooper and the City Council to direct employee pay measures." The Rocky [July 24, 2003, "Steps toward change"] also has a table listing the timeline for getting the measure on the ballot. The public hearings ought to be fun. Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [July 24, 2003, "Mayor targets annual raises"]. Here's an article from the Post [July 24, 2003, "Mayor, staffers give selves a pay cut"] about the pay cuts taken by the Mayor and his staffers. The article compares the salary level for some of the Mayor's appointees.
The Rocky [July 24, 2003, "The right resumé for a safety chief"] is running an editorial about the position of Manager of Safety and the resumé of Alvin LeCabe, the Mayor's new manager.

Dennis Gallagher named five appointees yesterday for his staff according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 24, 2003, "Gallagher names staff"]. From the article, "Dawn Sulley, Gallagher's former aide when he was on the City Council, was named deputy auditor. Brekenridge Grover, who worked in the oil, gas and mining industry, was appointed chief of staff of internal operations. R.D. Sewald, an appointee from former Mayor Wellington Webb's administration, will become Gallagher's liaison. Dennis Berckefeldt, a former assistant to the Colorado Senate's Democratic majority leader, is the auditor's communications director.
