2003 Denver Mayoral Transition

According to the Denver Post [July 30, 2003, "6 vying to be police chief"] Mayor Hickenlooper has narrowed the list of candidates for Police Chief to six candidates, all of whom are veterans of the police department. According to the Post the six finalists are: "Chief Gerry Whitman, a 21-year veteran, former District 6 commander and patrol division chief who oversaw security for the Oklahoma City bombing trial. Cmdr. Brian Gallagher, a 26-year veteran, now commander of District 1 in northwest Denver. Cmdr. Dave Abrams, a 32-year veteran, now deputy chief in charge of special operations, which include the Patrol Division, the Criminal Investigations Division and Public Information Office. Capt. Rudy Sandoval, a 33-year veteran, now commander of District 4 in southwest Denver. Capt. John Lamb, a 21-year veteran, former District 6 commander and former head of the civil liabilities section who now runs the traffic operations bureau. Special Operations Division Chief Juan Maldonado, a 32-year veteran and commander of special operations, who was a finalist for the chief's job won by Tom Sanchez after the retirement of Chief Dave Michaud in 1998."

Denver Charter Changes for the November 2003 Election

The timing isn't looking good for the group, Friends for Denver Municipal Service, to get their proposal on the November ballot, according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 30, 2003, "Crunch time for city pay plan"]. The group is trying to get a plan on the ballot as an alternative to the Charter changes that the Mayor and City Council are proposing. From the article, "They likely will have no more than five days to collect the more than 33,000 signatures needed to put the question to voters. Because that is a 'special election' for Denver, the group must collect the signatures of 10 percent of the registered voters in the city. As of Tuesday, Denver had 334,840 registered voters. The signatures have to be submitted by the close of business next Wednesday, which is 90 days before the election." Before the group can start collecting signatures a review by the City Attorney's office, City Council, and the Election Commission must be completed. The group is optimistic that the review can be completed by Friday leaving only 5 days to collect the signatures.

Don't forget to attend tonight's public hearing at the Webb Building at 5:30PM.
