2003 Denver Mayoral Transition

Mayor-elect Hickenlooper is hosting a fundraiser for the Colorado Environmental Coalition on Thursday night at his loft in downtown Denver. According to the Denver Post [July 15, 2003, "Hickenlooper event draws fire"] some pro-business groups are discouraged and feel that the event is not in line with the platform that the Mayor-elect espoused during the campaign. From the article, "Hickenlooper plans to host a $500-per-person benefit at his home Thursday night for the Colorado Environmental Coalition. Donors willing to give an extra $500 will get a private conversation with the incoming mayor. The invitation to the event also says that all donations will be matched by an anonymous donor. By using his position to raise money for the influential environmental coalition, Hickenlooper has stirred critics in the development community who say the coalition's agenda would choke economic development and constrict growth." The business groups must not have paid attention to the Mayor-elect's website during the campaign. One prominent issue highlighted there was his "Water Plan" calling for the clean-up of the South Platte River in "four years." I guess the pro-business groups felt they were buying the Mayor-elect's time exclusively by contributing to the $2.2 million that he raised for the election. Welcome to life in a fish bowl Mr. Hickenlooper.
