2003 Denver Mayoral Transition
The Rocky Mountain News [July 19, 2003, "Dear John"] is running a story containing advice from many of John Hickenlooper's soon to be constituents. People cited in the article include Mary DeGroot, The Rev. José H. Gomez, Don Bain, Tom Noel, David Miller, Cathy Reynolds, Rep. Terrance Carroll, Elaine Gantz Berman, Caren Griffin, Zee Ferrufino, Sen. Paula Sandoval, and Dani Newsum. The Denver Post [July 19, 2003, "Hickzonner the Mayor"] is running an column by Bob Ewegen where the writer gives his advice to the Mayor-elect. He's the deputy editorial page editor which explains how he can get away with the trying to pin the stupid nickname "Hickzonner" on John Hickenlooper. Of course it was another Post columnist, Ken Hamblin, that started the "Hick" crap during the election. The Rocky to their shame picked up on it but has since toned it down.
Here's a story from the Rocky Mountain News [July 19.2003, "Staffers to fill in for DIA manager"] about Mayor-elect Hickenlooper's political appointees and the resignation of Bruce Baumgartner as Manager of Aviation. From the article, "Turner West, DIA's deputy manager of aviation for maintenance and engineering, and Vicki Braunagel, the airport's deputy manager of business and technologies, will take over for Baumgartner while a nationwide search is conducted for a permanent replacement, (John) Huggins said." Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [July 19, 2003, "Aviation manager dismissed"]. From the Post article, "During his tenure, Baumgartner instituted changes to make the airport more flier friendly, said aviation analyst Mike Boyd of Evergreen. Baumgartner also stood up to federal airport-security regulators who insisted on installing screening machines in areas meant for passengers. 'Hickenlooper has one big milestone behind him: He has made his first big mistake,' Boyd said of Baumgartner's dismissal." Ouch. Here's a short article from the Denver Business Journal [July 18, 2003, "Baumgartner out as DIA manager"].
The Rocky [July 19, 2003, "Hickenlooper trust yet to be created"] is reporting the the Mayor-elect's blind trust for his businesses is not in place yet. Earlier this year Mr. Hickenlooper had indicated that he wanted to have the trust in place prior to his taking office. The trust is not required by the City Ethics Board but the Mayor-elect wants to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest. Good idea, Bruce Baumgartner wouldn't be in the spotlight if he had used the same type of thinking. From the article, "Hickenlooper owns seven restaurants in Denver, including the Wynkoop Brewing Co. in lower downtown that he opened in 1988. The mayor-elect also owns stock in some Denver companies, which he also said would become part of the trust."
