"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

Oops, sorry. We won't link to latimes.com stories, anymore. Apparently you have to register to see older stories.

By the way, what we really need is for libraries to manage the archives -- not these fly-by-night corporations. Why should latimes.com or nytimes.com serve up old articles? They should hand them off to libraries. Libraries should display the articles with whatever advertising the original issues carried, but the key thing is that the information is available to the public. This is key to democracy. Corporations only exist by the grace of our laws and Constitution, and if they aren't willing to contribute to our democracy, corporations should just be de-licensed.

In my more spiritually attuned moments, I find the drama thrilling. What do you think we're here for, anyway?

A friend once told me she doesn't "believe in God". I laughed. As if whether you believe in God makes a lick of difference? Actually, I think I know what she means. I think she means that the personality ascribed to "God" in the Jewish tradition is stupid. I mean, how big of a twit do you have to be to think Jewish mythology is worth an ounce more than Greek or Roman mythology?

So do you think we are here to fulfill a "plan", or do you think we respond to unfolding opportunities. Well, if your vision of the Universe is limited to Newtonian physics, you could think of the Universe as just a question of billiard balls bouncing around -- predictable, if you can measure and calculate.

But we know that's stupid -- taking the measurement and performing the calculation changes the result.

We are here to respond as opportunities unfold. We can respond in ways that move the Universe onward and upward, or we can respond in ways that stifle. But after every action we have another opportunity to choose. Upward or downward.

So what about this idiot, Little George?

Well, we're here. The drama is intense. We get to choose how to respond. The potential for evil is huge.

Laughably, the Jews who ranted about "never again" are too busy slaughtering Palestinians (and being slaughtered) to notice their own racist hatred, or to comment on the rise of fascism in the world.

Meanwhile, Little George's gang of treasonous thugs leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. Little George's trust fund is itself directly descended from his grandfather's profits from slave labor at Auschwitz. Do you need any more clues? Thyssen used slave labor at Auschwitz, and now they sell missile components to Iraq -- missiles waiting to be launched at Israel. Halliburton supplied chemicals for Iraq's bioweapons program, as well as the Vice President of the United States. The key backer of many of Little George's early business failures is a key Osama Bin Laden financier.

Meanwhile Israel's religious whackos are drooling at the prospect of war with Iraq: they can use their nukes on Iraq, and then quick expel the Palestinians. Talk about "two birds with one stone"....

Excuse me! Islamic fundamentalist whackos are nowhere near as dangerous as Christian and Jewish fundamentalist whackos.

In the Reagan/Poppy era, it wasn't completely obvious that poverty was part of the plan. After all, there was inflation when they started.

Little George relieves any chance of illusion. It is even more important for them to make us poor than it is to increase their own wealth. Only poverty and fear will let them win. But now we know that poverty is optional. We saw incredible wealth generated under Clinton's policies. In fact, that's the nature of the Universe. People, animals, plants -- all create wealth. Prosperity is natural, and only incompetence or careful planning can prevent it. At this point in economic developement, it's especially difficult to keep prosperity from bursting out: more and more, prosperity depends on intellectual inputs -- inputs that are very difficult to make scarce.

And that's it: with everything in the balance, we -- as a population of the United States, and of the Earth -- get to choose. Do we want to live under a fascist empire, or do we want peace and prosperity? Every politician, every journalist, every soldier, every police officer, every citizen on the whole planet has input into this great decision. What will we choose today? What will we choose tomorrow?

Terrorists, empire, Israel vs. Palestine, Microsoft, RIAA....

Whether your turn-on is love or greed, power, and hatred, you can't escape that these are exciting times.

Has anybody heard the name "Condoleeza Rice" lately? Ever since Time reported she couldn't even remember being warned about Bin Laden, she's out of the media.

Licentious Radio reminds you: Condi's sole claim to fame is that she completely misunderstood the Soviet Union -- like all the other idiot "cold warriors". Now all the idiot cold warriors base their careers on 200 Al Qaeda terrorists. Clinton had Al Qaeda on the run. But Bush & Company stopped the investigations and surveillance of Bin Laden. Not coincidentally, Osama Bin Laden's financial backers were also Bush's financial backers. Bin Laden wiped out the World Trade Center, and now Condi -- whose complete stupidity and incompetence are to a great extent responsible for more than 3,000 American deaths -- gets to lead the fight on terrorism. And if you dissent, she can label you an "illegal combatant", and have you put on drugs and thrown in solitary confinement until the end of time, or until they've won the "war on terrorism" -- whichever comes first.

Bring us their heads! This woman should be on trial for treason -- for leaving the United States open to attack, simply because she's an idiot, working for an idiot, who would rather steal billions/trillions of dollars from taxpayers than keep us safe from foreign threats.

BartCop quotes a Reuters story that I can't find elsewhere. Maybe it's not real? Maybe it's a secret?

[Update as of 8-16: this is claimed to be a hoax. Maybe there was no presidential directive last Sunday night. But then again, how far off is it from secret arrests and secret military trials with the death penalty as the outcome?)

Bush OK's Summary Executions Of Some Designated As Terrorists 8-12-2002

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a surprise move sure to raise outcries from foreign governments, civil liberties groups and others, The White House today announced with little fanfare that effective immediately, certain individuals whom President Bush or other high-level Administration members have designated as terrorists are subject to summary execution by either Homeland Security operatives, U.S. intelligence operatives, and in some cases by U.S. military personnel.

The presidential directive applies to both U.S. and foreign citizens, both within and outside the United States territory.

The White House gave notice of the new policy in as quiet a way as possible, making the announcement late Sunday evening from Crawford, Texas. The unprecedented move is thought certain to generate a firestorm of protest from numerous quarters.

Don't miss: Global warmth for U.S. after 9/11 turns to frost [usatoday.com].

Dear friends around the world,

It is not *exactly* "America" that is the problem here. As you may recall, we are victims of a coup d'etat. The junta seized power on the 100% phony pretense of a deadline for reporting votes to the Library of Congress -- which the Library of Congress insisted was not a deadline. This junta is the main problem. The second problem is the Democratic party -- only one Senator was required to block approval of the election, and in fact the election results were not ratified with the legally-required quorum (as I understand it). The third problem is that we're too nice to start a civil war to throw the junta out -- we're counting on impeachment, but that will be a slow process.

I was awed by and grateful for Europe's response to September 11 -- the silence. Thank you. That was beautiful.

What you should do is block the Bush junta's world-wide war. We will do our best, but with the media here in the pocket of the junta, there is a limit to what can be accomplished democratically. I apologize for the various crimes committed by my government, and for Bush's continued attacks on prosperity. We all suffer, you know.

Let's hope we all learn something from this bout with fascism.

Read today IBM layoffs come to just over 15,600. Will HP fire a few thousand extra so they don't lose the layoff race?
