"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

It's Time for Congress to Protect Our Freedoms 8/24 [newsday.com]: 'The House report on the act speaks of lawmakers' intent to bar detentions "in any facility of the United States Government..." It spells out congressional concern about citizens who could be "subject to arbitrary executive action, with no clear demarcation of the limits of executive authority."'

Stupid W. couldn't even catch Bin Laden. Why should we believe Stupid W.'s men could get Saddam? Oh, bomb Iraqi cities flat, yeah. Heck, Sharon'll nuke the place for us, and we won't even have to ask. But "get" Saddam?

"Exit Strategy"? Ha, ha, ha.

If you could track queries at Google by subject over time, you would have a slightly skewed measure of socially perceived importance of issues. You could see how issues spike, and you could see how spikes crowd each other out.

Google is sitting on a gold mine.

While the stock market climbs for lack of terror warnings, the price of oil rises dramatically because of war talk about Iraq. Everything El Stupido does to protect his ratings comes back to hurt us.

(Long-run, of course, higher oil prices and concerted conservation efforts would be good for the economy. Short-term spike mostly aid profiteers like Bush's cronies. Without conservation and alternative energy development, the economy loses. We need prosperity to pay for the switch to clean energy, and to lift most of the world out of poverty.)

Get while the gettin's good. In this case "take" while the takin's good: "The total amount of sweetheart insider loans doled out to John Rigas (Adelphia), Bernie Ebbers (WorldCom), Stephen Hilbert (Conseco), Dennis Kozlowski (Tyco) and Ken Lay (Enron) was $3.9 billion." -- HUFFINGTON [ariannaonline.com].
