"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

Bill Of Rights Pared Down To A Manageable Six [theonion.com]: "We're not taking away personal rights; we're increasing personal security," Ashcroft said.

[6:06:42 PM]
So Bush screwed McCain back in South Carolina. He screwed McCain big-time on campaign finance reform just recently. He screwed McCain again on the September 11 Commission -- the deal was for McCain and Shelby to pick one candidate, in exchange for Bush picking the chair. *Lott* of all people is doing Bush's handiwork on this one -- refusing to appoint hands-down, no-brainer, best-choice Rudman.

Can Bush afford to lose the Senate's cooperation? Maybe he thinks the war will mow down any opposition? I hope it isn't that he happens to know a 737 with a full load of fuel will fly into the Capitol building during a roll-call vote in the Senate. (Ha ha.)

But seriously, these are interesting times. What if Lott got so mad at being stabbed in the back that he just quit the Senate entirely? A Democrat would appoint the successor. What if Chaffee took the chance to jump-ship from the party of Racism, Poverty, War, and Pollution, and give the Senate a chance to be more than Rove's rubber stamp? What if Daschle stepped down, and we put somebody strong in charge. (How about Boxer?) Would war be enough to keep the country in thrall?

[5:00:20 PM]
So is it supposed to be an "accident" that the Council of Conservative Citizens is CCC? Like, completely different from KKK? Now they're CofCC -- much more politer. But were they always?

[4:05:47 PM]
You know, when Lott made his famous remark, he was *at* the White House. Bush was there. There were video cameras. Bush is on video applauding Lott's remarks. Good thing the Republican Corporate Media decides what video clips go on TV.

[10:00:30 AM]
"Losing bin Laden would be a blow to the organization, but not a crippling blow." Silly me, I though he meant Rove's organization. But maybe he meant Al Qaeda.

[9:55:54 AM]
Joke of the day: why would Bush demand early elections in Venezuela when they would be unconstitutional?

[9:51:33 AM]
Oh, Trent! Have the grace not to wriggle with Karl's knife in your back. Just slip quietly into the water like Barr and Lindsey and the rest.

[9:44:45 AM]
The Smoking Gun on RIAA lies! Turns out demand fell 10% while the number of CDs released fell 25%. Get it? The RIAA did this to themselves. It's like a Reichstag fire, used to give PR cover to their cash-and-carry Senators. Andrew Orlowski [theregister.co.uk].
