News - Should we invade and occupy Iraq? James Webb writes well about the
dangers: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A34847-2002Sep3.html
Comment - Webb has written several good fiction books, and he's a
well-regarded former Marine, Navy Secretary and military analyst who's
frequently in the Wall Street Journal. He makes some good points in this
article. But I keep thinking back to my reading of Civil War history. It was
Lincoln's will and vision, not his generals', that pushed and shoved the
North to victory (he wasn't helped by the fact that most of the U.S. Army's
best generals - Lee, Longstreet, A.P. Hill - went over to the Confederacy).
I hope Bush knows what he's doing. With all the talk about invading Iraq, I
don't know how we can back down now, especially since the only thing the
tyrants in the Middle East understand is power.
News - Okay, for a completely different point of view (much more optimistic
and idealistic) check out this column:

Comment - This is the kind of mission that Americans can rally around:
toppling the tyrants, and bringing peace and democracy to the Middle East.
Ultimately, that's the only thing that will keep us secure from terrorism.
News - Buying a computer? Here's recommendations from the Wall Street
Journal: http://ptech.wsj.com/guide-pc.html
Comment - 256 megs of RAM, 40 gig hard drive, at least a 1.1 gigahertz chip,
CD-RW drive, 16 megs of video RAM. These suggestions are about 4 months old,
but still seem to make sense to me.
Our desktop computers at home are considerably slower than 1.1 gh, but they
still work fine for surfing the Net. Never-the-less, I'm noodling around the
idea of getting a completely new desktop machine for Christmas. Why? Because
I'd like to play the new Combat Mission game (and a number of other new
games) but my current machine is too slow. I'll even consider a Mac just for
fun...but they are still very expensive. We'll see how our real estate
situation is this fall.
