Book Updates:

Last week I finished Of Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham. An excellent book that although published in 1915, is as applicable today as it was 90 years ago. The twin issues of relationships and money are timeless -nothing ever changes on those two fronts. Maugham is a master of character depiction and development. His books although deceptively accessible (and I ask - what's wrong with accessiblity?) are true gems.

I also read The Guide by R.K. Narayan. A story set in very rural India (probably after Partition). The book was o.k. - I've read much more compelling Indian books (the most recent of which was A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry - an amazing book). But this clean little straight forward story was almost a parable and in that way was actually quite enjoyable. The strongest sections were that of our flawed protagonist as a venerated but reluctant Mahatma. Again - although predictable, good character development and growth.

Well, surprisingly, we didn't wake up to snow this morning. But last night's cold hard rain and wind drove a ton of leaves off the trees. Most of the trees in our yard are sans leaves at this point. And it is cold again this morning: 35 degrees F. Snow is surely not far off. I think I'm going to attempt a roller ski this afternoon!
