I'm stumbling through the aftermath of Dad's death. The initial thundering wave of grief seems to have passed for the moment. But now I just feel depressed. Really depressed. I think if I could choose, I'd take the grief over the depression. Grief has passion. Depression has nothing.

I have managed to get out and do things (see the AMIPA entry below). But deep down (actually not so deep) I just feel like roadkill. When someone dies they're not going to come back. Everday I live from now on will not have Dad in it. That is depressing. Although, given Dad's grandiose personality, it is a bit of relief. But still depressing.

Last night the Ski Boy and I attended a most entertaining soiree: the Alaska Moving Images Preservation Association (AMIPA) Politics of the Past (PoPs) fundraiser. And what fun it was - AMIPA has outstanding collection of politically related "moving images." And what they don't have, they can access from other collections.

The clips were fabulous. But the people watching was just as good - much of old Political Alaska was there. It was a real treat to see everyone gathered together in one place. I bet ADN's The Ear will have a good time recounting juicy tidbits.

The first portion of the show was devoted to the drive for Statehood. Absolutely great stuff. We then moved through Alaska's political history decade by decade. The most startling revelation was that nothing ever changes - thirty years ago subsistence was a huge issue. Twenty years ago was the first go around of the capitol move.

My personal favorites were (in reverse order):

3. Helen Huston's "1968 Art in the Attic" segment on the american and alaska flags. Helen is a friend of mine to this day.

2. Brad Bradley's 1970 ad shooting inflation right between the eyes. I miss those days.

1. Mitch Abood in the '80's I think, performing on the floor of the Alaska State Senate absolute drop dead on impersonations of each State Senator. I hurt myself laughing on this one.

Barry Bonds is pretty darn amazing. He just hit a giant homerun in his first at bat in his first World Series. As Jon Miller, the ESPN radio announcer, just said, it will probably be several games before the Angels pitch to him again.
