From Phil: Giants: 4-3. That'll teach me to make comments about them rolling over and playing dead.  7:47:45 PM

Comments like that will nail you everytime. Peter is single handedly responsible for the Red Sox losing the '86 Series to the Mets. In the 9th inning of game six, Peter called his Mom to celebrate - she answered just in time to see the ball roll through poor Bill Buckner's legs.

So I got nailed today on my laptop by the messenger/netsend spam technique. It is really nasty. From tech/tv, here's an explanation of the netsend facility:

What is this messenger service and why is it spam? The easiest way to explain it is to show you the ethical and non-ethical ways of using the messenger service. The ethical use turns the messenger service into a handy tool for system administrators. They can monitor servers and send out status pop-ups if a problem occurs. See an example by clicking here.

I really should install a firewall. In the meantime, I'm shutting down the messenger/netsend service tonight so that hole will be closed. From techtv here's how:

To turn off the messenger service in XP:

  1. Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
  2. Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel and go to Administrative Tools.
  3. Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
  4. Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
  5. Change the startup type to Disable (see an example).

Whoa - we just had a nice little shaker. We were definitely rolling for quite some time. I will say, Peter's house is not bad in an earthquake. Not that I haven't felt the earth move here previously...When the trains rumble by, the house shakes pretty hard.

UPDATE 7:50 AM: According the Tsunami Warning Center, the quake measured 6.2 on the Richter Scale. Actually, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center, the preliminary measurement was 6.7. No matter - 6.7 or 6.2 - both are pretty respectable.

UPDATE #2 7:14 PM: The Tsunami Warning Center now says the quake was 6.7. Very impressive.
