Jez has written a very simple client-side Java blogger - LocalBlog. It now uses Velocity. Cool! [Blogging Roller]

Microsoft takes heavy losses on the Xbox: "Microsoft can absorb the Xbox losses. The company has an estimated $42 billion in cash reserves and, for the year ending June 30, it is expected to report a net profit of about $10 billion and revenues of $28.25 billion."

Wireless Broadband's Holy Grail? The VC's laughed. The NY Times wrote an article praising the technology. The VC's are now beating down the door. Makes you a little cynical about the intelligence of these capitalists doesn't it? Perhaps startups should just pay John Markoff instead of writing a business plan.

BEA releases WebLogic 7, partners with HP

Quote of the day from some chump manager: BEA's products "may not all be best of breed, but they're up there with the best of them,". Way to give your partner a compliment in their press release mate.

All I can say about BEA 7 is... that's a lot of moolah!

  • WebLogic 7.0 Platform - $90,000 per processor (yes, you read right)
  • WebLogic Portal - $57,000 per processor
  • WebLogic Workshop - $2,495 per developer (wow)
  • WebLogic Server - $12,000 per processor

Fuzzy Scott on the iBook and OSX:

The level of integration, fit and finish on an iBook continues to amaze me.  I'd also make the comment that working on a machine that is just plain visually beautiful is, well, different.  I can't really put my finger on it but the overall computing experience just feels "more right".

Amen - I love my iBook. Never ceases to amaze me how the thing just works.

So I went to look at it on www.bbedit.com and I see that it's $119 and expires after 24 launches.  Hmmm...  That's a lot more expensive than what seems to be a comparable Windows programming editor like www.editplus.com (approx $30) and the eval period seems, well, wrong.

I use BBEdit Lite and it seems to work for me (I only use it very rarely for text file editing). Alternatively you might want to try jEdit which is a very good, free editor written in Java. Given the Apple JDK's integration with Aqua and OSX, it looks and feels just like a native app.
