An odd thing about the Jayson Blair fiasco is that it must have taken more work to fabricate the stories than it would have to report them. One of journalism’s dirty little secrets (exposed by amateurs with weblogs) is that journalism ain’t that hard.

 

We’ve read a lot about the motives of the Times in giving Blair special treatment, but not much about Blair’s own reasons for making stuff up. Whatever drives serial fabricators, it wouldn’t seem to be laziness or lack of initiative – traits more likely revealed in reporters who call the same three sources every time and rewrite each others’ stories.

The Atlantic Coast Conference, a fifty-year-old athletic league, has committed suicide. The cause of death was gluttony. The motive was money.

 

The successor conference may be just grand, but college sports fans will mourn the traditions and rivalries of the proud old ACC built around four North Carolina universities. UNC and Duke, archrivals united by common sense, voted against the expansion.

 

Ed Hardin: “Football money has always driven the business of college sports, so it's really no surprise this has happened. It was inevitable, but in our naiveté we hoped things could stay the same.”
