FINED: Jim Bowden, Cincinnati Reds

NEW YORK -- Associated Press reports Jim Bowden was fined an undisclosed amount by commissioner Bud Selig on Friday, a day after the Cincinnati Reds general manager compared a potential baseball strike with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

NEW YORK -- Associated Press reports lesbian fans of the New York Liberty accused the WNBA team's management of ignoring their presence at Madison Square Garden and protested by kissing during Friday night's game.

TAX SETTLEMENT: Boris Becker, tennis

BERLIN -- Associated Press reports three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker reached an early settlement on his tax evasion case, a German magazine reported Saturday. A plan has been worked out in which Becker will pay the taxes he's charged with avoiding, plus penalties of $6.6 million, according to Der Spiegel weekly.

RECOMMENDED PENALTY: Mohammed Mourfit, long distance runner

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Associated Press reports Belgium athletics officials have moved to ban European record-holder Mohammed Mourhit for three years for failing a doping test. The 21-year-old runner underwent an out-of-competition test on May 3 that showed the use of EPO, or erythropoietin, an illegal endurance-boosting substance.

PASSED: Tour de France field

GENEVA -- Reuters reports All the doping tests carried out on riders at the Tour de France this year have proved negative. The International Cycling Union (UCI) said Friday that the Anti-Doping Commission (ADC) took 141 urine samples during the three-week event and all gave negative results "regarding the doping products."

LITIGATION: Sulaiman v. Tyson, Lewis, et al

NEW YORK -- Associated Press reports the president of the World Boxing Council has filed a $56 million lawsuit against Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, saying he was knocked out, spat on and threatened during a fracas between the fighters at a news conference in January. Jose Sulaiman said in court papers that he sustained severe physical and psychological injuries in the melee Jan. 22 in New York.

LITIGATION: Wheeler v. Northwestern University

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Daily Northwestern reports the legal battle still is unresolved between Northwestern and Rashidi Wheeler's parents, Linda Will and George Wheeler. According to Will, a status conference will be held Aug. 7 with the deposition following in November.

SUSPENDED: Branden Joe, Ohio State University

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Associated Press reports Ohio State fullback Branden Joe, charged with drunken driving, has been suspended for three weeks of preseason camp and the Buckeyes' opening game. Joe, a 20-year-old sophomore, was arrested July 26 after police found him asleep in a car about 3:45 a.m. on a highway ramp near campus. On Wednesday, Joe's attorney pleaded innocent to the charge on the player's behalf.
