VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Associated Press reports former boxing champion Pernell ``Sweetpea'' Whitaker was given a four-year suspended sentence Monday for violating probation on a cocaine possession charge.

SANCTIONS: San Diego State
SAN DIEGO -- Associated Press reports San Diego State announced a series of self-imposed penalties Monday for violating NCAA rules by holding summer football workouts at a local beach. The school said it will eliminate 21 practice days through the 2004 season, cut six scholarships through 2005, and suspend assistant coach Damon Baldwin for six practice days, including five without pay, during the 2002 fall camp.

ENTERS INNOCENT PLEA: Michael Rumph, San Francisco 49ers
MIAMI -- Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers rookie cornerback Michael Rumph pleaded innocent Monday to driving under the influence, and a warrant for his arrest was revoked. Rumph did not appear in court and his attorney, Scott Hecker, entered the plea for him, according to the Miami-Dade State Attorney's office. A trial date has not been set.

WINNIPEG, Canada -- Reuters reports the FBI's New York office, taking a break from the war on terrorism, has requested an interview with French figure skating judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne in the wake of last week's arrest of a Russian on charges of vote rigging at the Winter Olympics. The FBI want to interview Le Gougne, who was banned for three years for her role in the Salt Lake City Olympics pairs judging scandal, about reported Russian mobster Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov.

ARRESTED: Benny Sapp, Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Associated Press reports Iowa defensive back Benny Sapp was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public intoxication after police saw him push a woman into a building. The 21-year-old Sapp was charged with three simple misdemeanors and released on his own recognizance from the Johnson County Jail on Sunday.
