HELD WITHOUT BAIL: Alonzo Spellman, former NFL
PHILADELPHIA -- Associated Press reports former NFL lineman Alonzo Spellman was ordered held without bail in a federal jail Tuesday after a judge ruled he was too dangerous to be released.
The 31-year-old Spellman is accused of threatening a pilot and flight attendant and harassing passengers during a Delta Air Lines flight from Cincinnati to Philadelphia.

SETTLEMENT: Will Bartholomew, Denver Broncos
GREELEY, Colo. -- Associated Press reports the Denver Broncos waived fullback Will Bartholomew on Tuesday after reaching an injury settlement.
Bartholomew, a rookie free agent, has been unable to practice since July 29 because of a strain to his right thigh. He also faces season-ending surgery on his right knee to correct an injury suffered during his college career at Tennessee.

ACQUITTED: Tom Penders, former NCAA basketball coach
AUSTIN, Texas -- Associated Press reports former Texas basketball coach Tom Penders was cleared of charges he defamed his former assistant's reputation following a 1998 grade scandal. A 12-member jury denied each of former Texas assistant Eddie Oran's claims Tuesday. Only 10 members of the jury had to sign off on the verdict in the civil case. Two jurors did not sign the verdict.

BAC: Derrick Coleman, Philadelphia 76ers
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Associated Press reports Philadelphia 76ers forward Derrick Coleman was legally drunk when he was stopped for driving about 100 mph last month. Test results showed Coleman had a blood alcohol level of 0.13 percent when he was stopped on July 27. Michigan's legal limit is 0.10 percent.

SETTLEMENT: Wilpon v. Doubleday, New York Mets
NEW YORK -- Associated Press reports Nelson Doubleday agreed Tuesday to sell his 50 percent of the New York Mets to co-owner Fred Wilpon, settling an ugly lawsuit filled with accusations of misconduct. Wilpon sued Doubleday last month in federal court to try to force a sale of his partner's 50 percent share based on a $391 million appraisal of the team made in March by Robert Starkey.

COLLUSION CHARGES: Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs
NEW YORK -- ESPN.com reports the NFL Players Association, acting on behalf of unsigned first-round draft choices Ryan Sims and Bryant McKinnie, has filed a formal request for an inquiry into what it feels is collusion by the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings.

FAILS TO SHOW: Jose Canseco, former MLB
MIAMI -- Associated Press reports former American League MVP Jose Canseco skipped a court hearing Tuesday where he and his twin brother were supposed to enter pleas on charges stemming from a nightclub scuffle on Halloween. Circuit Judge Leonard E. Glick angrily told Canseco's attorney that his client faces arrest if he does not attend the next hearing, which he set for Aug. 23.

STILL JAILED: Edita Rumsas, wife of Lithuanian cyclist Raimondas Rumsas
PARIS -- Reuters reports a French magistrate has rejected a request to release from jail the wife of the Lithuanian cyclist Raimondas Rumsas who is at the center of a Tour de France doping scandal. A local magistrate ruled Edita Rumsas had not given a convincing explanation why she was carrying doping substances when she was arrested near the Mont Blanc tunnel leading to Italy on July 28, the last day of the Tour. The hotel rooms of Rumsas's Lampre-Daikin team were raided by French police and customs officers on the same day but the rider himself had already flown home to Italy. He has since tested negative for drugs, it was announced earlier Tuesday.
