APPEALING: Derek Watson, South Carolina State

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Associated Press reports South Carolina State running back Derek Watson was released from jail Tuesday pending an appeal of his 10-day sentence related to marijuana possession. Watson, a former 1,000-yard rusher for South Carolina, was kicked off the team by coach Lou Holtz following a series of transgressions, culminating with his January arrest for marijuana possession outside a nightclub in Greenville.

SUSPENDED: Brandon Williams, University of Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -- Associated Press reports Georgia cornerback Brandon Williams, acquitted of rape charges last week, was reinstated to the team Tuesday but suspended for the first three games. Under school policy, Williams was automatically suspended in April after being charged with a felony.

DISMISSED: Wendell Greenleaf, Baylor University

WACO, Texas -- Associated Press reports Baylor senior guard Wendell Greenleaf, a two-year starter, has been dismissed from the team after being arrested twice on assault charges. Greenleaf faces misdemeanor charges of assault-family violence and possession of under two ounces of marijuana. Greenleaf was already on deferred probation for an April 18 incident in which Waco police said he broke down an apartment door and slapped his ex-girlfriend.

PENALTIES: Bobby Wade, Javier Martinez, Andre Torrey, University of Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Associated Press reports three Arizona football players will help build homes for the needy on Sept. 11 instead of serving suspensions for their run-ins with police this summer. Coach John Mackovic said wide receiver Bobby Wade and defensive ends Javier Martinez and Andre Torrey will work a construction shift with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit group that constructs homes for underprivileged residents.

NCAA INQUIRY: University of Washington

SEATTLE -- Seattle Times reports while two NCAA investigators interviewed coaches at Gonzaga and Eastern Washington yesterday regarding alleged violations by the new Washington basketball staff, UW officials defended the program and questioned the protocol of those making the accusations.

NO TEAM PENALTY: Mo Mitchell, Kelvin Kight, Sylvester McGrew, Florida

GAINESVILLE -- Palm Beach Post reports the three Florida players were cited for alcohol-related citations last weekend are not expected to miss any playing time. Florida opens its season at 6 p.m. Saturday at home against Alabama-Birmingham. Offensive tackle Mo Mitchell, wide receiver Kelvin Kight and defensive end Sylvester McGrew received citations for open container violations Saturday night. Kight and McGrew were issued underage drinking citations.

RAPE HEARING: Darrell Russell, Oakland Raiders

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Sacramento Bee reports a weekend arrest in Carson City, Nev., for speeding and driving under the influence will have no bearing on a court hearing Friday in Alameda for suspended Raiders defensive tackle Darrell Russell, who is accused of rape. The Alameda district attorney's office said Russell and two other men are due in court Friday for what is expected to be the final session of a preliminary hearing on 25 counts of rape and sexual assault charges. Alameda County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Allen will decide afterward if there is sufficient evidence for a trial.

ARRESTED: Andrew Walker, ACT Brumbies
SYDNEY – Reuters reports Australia and ACT Brumbies utility back Andrew Walker has been charged by police with drink-driving after crashing his car over the weekend. Brumbies general manager Mark Sinderberry described the incident as regrettable and said Walker would appear at Yass Magistrates Court on Sept. 16. The Canberra Times newspaper said earlier on Tuesday that Walker had been charged after a four-wheel drive vehicle crashed into a power pole in the early hours of Saturday in Yass, 34 miles north of Canberra. The Australian Rugby Union has not yet commented on the incident.

CHARGES DROPPED: Scott Erickson, Baltimore Orioles

BALTIMORE – Baltimore Sun reports Orioles pitcher Scott Erickson won't be charged with second-degree assault after authorities interviewed his girlfriend, closing a case that included his arrest in Baltimore last month. Erickson was taken into custody July 22 after a heated argument with Lisa Ortiz at their downtown apartment. He was scheduled to appear before a domestic violence judge on Sept. 6 before city prosecutors elected not to press charges.

ARRESTED: Mo Mitchell, Kelvin Kight, Sylvester McGrew, Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gator Bait reports Florida football players Mo Mitchell, Kelvin Kight and Sylvester McGrew were all given notices to appear in court for violation of the open container law by two University Police Department officers Saturday night. Also, Kight and McGrew face additional charges for possession of alcohol under the age of 21.

ARRESTED: Wendell Greenleaf, Baylor University

WACO, Texas – The Lariat reports Baylor senior guard Wendell Greenleaf was arrested for the second time this year on Aug. 1 for assault and marijuana possession. Greenleaf, a two-year starter for the Baylor men's basketball team and member of the 2002 Big 12 All-Defensive team, already was suspended from the team earlier this summer for at least the fall semester because of his arrest in April for the alleged assault of a former girlfriend.

ARRESTED: Cheyne Gadson, Anthony Allen, Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Daily O'Collegian reports two Oklahoma State University basketball players were arrested in connection with a Friday morning riot that erupted at a local Whataburger involving more than 300 people. OSU players Cheyne Gadson, 22, of Stillwater, and Anthony Allen, 19, of Chicago, were arrested by the Stillwater Police Department and charged with public intoxication, resisting an officer and obstructing an officer.
