The Last Straw
Today I was witness to a very unsettling situation. One in which two long time friends became at odds. It was disconcerting because they had always appeared, to the outside world, to be on the very best of terms. Certainly there were always quips and jibes from time to time and I believe that we all thought that to be just the nature of their friendship. Not everyone goes around "holding hands" and even the best of friends have their frustrations that must be dealt with. So when they showed the first signs of disagreement, not much was amiss. But as the arguement escalated, it was obvious even to those outside "the circle" that something was terribly wrong. An uncomfortable aire prevailed and angry words were thrown about as easy as a hand full of seed. A hurtful name begot yet another, the tone darkened and many emotions broiled from within to bubble over and scald the participants. Perhaps one of the words was one too many, the straw that broke the camels back. I suppose it's somewhat relieving when pent up feelings surface and see the light of day, but still, I realize that they can wound as easily as any knife. One walked away in disgust while the other continued his venting. And the remaining onlookers seemed stunned and amazed at the spectacle that had just proceeded. We wondered just how this can...or if...it will be resolved. Hopefully, time will cool the waters and present calmer, clearer and more level thinking. I realize that passions run deep but it seems to me, such a tragedy that people can allow their emotions such free reign and jeopardize relationships!
