Young At Heart
My thoughts today drifted back to the little girl on the airplane and how the young in our society seem to share a zeal for uninhibited happiness. That is not to say that the old are all stodgey curmudgeons, as I know of many who are quite "young at heart". I suppose it has a great deal to do with one's outlook on life rather than just some arbitrary age one achieves. So is it any wonder that when you encounter either of these extremes, you yourself have very different feelings and reactions. From my own personal experiences, I am well aware, for instance, that the little girl on the plane brought a smile to my own face. That her demeanor and her playful attitude actually made me feel "better". On the other hand, I have also been around those who's outlook was nothing short of dismal and disillusioned. During those encounters I certainly remember the pangs of sorrow and restlessness. It seems that when someone exudes cheerful feelings and joyful enthusiasm we are drawn to them as a moth is to a flame. Perhaps it is this youthful bliss that attracts us and quite possibly, sets our own attitudes in a like direction. If such carefree happiness is a by-product of their outlook then I choose to seek out those with just such a "youthful heart"!

The passions of the young are vices in the old.-Joseph Joubert
