Dinner...

Went to dinner tonight over at Bertucci's in Clarendon Market Common. We went there mainly because the line at Big Bowl was 80 minutes long. Bertucci's is a pizza place with "an italian flair" that's part of a bigger chain that's now just put itself in the middle of retail heaven to capitalize on the cash in the area. It's a shame they didn't do a good job with the restaurant. The obvious drop-ceiling took away from decor. Not to mention we had to wait to talk with a maitre d' in order to get on the list. The food was pretty good. And except for the service, which was abysmal, it was a pretty average meal. Next time, I'll call ahead to Big Bowl.

Much of what we do...

Much of what we do as a society is focused around how we handle catastrophes, how we handle difficult times, how we handle risk and suffering and success. We don't speak out enough in times of trouble, and we speak out too much in times of success. So in this time of tragedy, in this time where the space program may be cast into a limbo from which it would be difficult to rise from, write down a small memorial to these 7 men and women who gave their lives in the cause of science. In the cause to spread our wings as humanity and leave our home, taking toddling steps away from our safe bed of comfort.

We risk much as a society by going into space on a regular basis. We risk the deaths of those involved, we risk the loss of valuable assets as a nation, both scientist and equipment capital. We risk our own failure. But that speaks volumes about who we are as a nation, who we are as a people. We dare to be honestly great. We dare to step up against the laws of physics and of meta-reality and say "We Shall Not Be Limited" in the face of overpopulation, in the face of growing pollution, in the face of warring factions.

We need to continue to do so, we need to rebuild our program above and beyond how it lies in pieces over the heart of Texas. We need to go back to the Moon. We need to extend the ISS. We need to plan to go to Mars and then beyond. We cannot expect to survive on just our planet forever. Mortgaging the future to pay for the past and the present is an unacceptable fate for our space program.

It's time that we set our sights back on space again. If for no other reason than to respect those who died getting us this far. To abandon the program is to disrespect their memory.

So write a memorial for these people. Tell us your thoughts. Record it and PDF it for posterity. With luck, we can create a fitting memorial for those 7 by taking those thoughts with us as we rebuild.

Great coverage of Nasa Briefing

Dan's got really really good coverage of the technical briefing on his blog. As always, spot on. Thanks, Dan.

Angry and Sad

I posted a link in my last post to a discussion thread on democratic underground that suggested that President Bush blew up Columbia. To the author of that post: Who the hell are you? The debris hasn't all landed yet, and you're using this incident to denigrate the president? Have you no soul? Let's find out just what happened, let's bury our dead, let's determine where we go next before we start throwing stones. You people sicken me.

In ancient days, men looked at the stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood...For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind
