Chief among many amazing things about this morning's revelation that the City of Greensboro is indeed managing the Greensboro Generals hockey team is the lax attitudes and dismissive comments from our elected officials.
Tom Phillips: "I don't have a problem with it,"
Mayor Holliday On Ice (Thanks Mr. Sun): "We knew there were going to be expenses, including salaries,"
Florence Gatten: "also said she supports the deal."
Don Vaughn: "It's the first I've heard of it... aren't they a private club?"
Robbie Perkins: "While it may seem at face value as inappropriate, it's something you have to do."
Where is the outrage? I have talked to several City Council members, both sitting and past, about the workings of the City. They all express frustration that they can't get all of the information that they need to make decisions from the City staff, but the Council is the body that is held accountable. Why are they not pounding their collective fists on the diaz demanding to be completely included in and informed about such obviously controversial issues?
While this may very well turn out to be in the best interest of the taxpayers, it has yet to be proven... hell... it hasn't even been talked about publicly. This is another example of Greensboro's "ready... FIRE... aim" approach to public policy.
