Tropical Storm Gert



At  1 AM CDT, the center of newly developed Tropical Storm Gert was at 19.8 North  94.7 West, 105 miles east-southeast of Veracruz Mexico and moving to the west-northwest at 10 mph.  Maximum sustained winds are 40 mph and minimum central pressure is estimated to be 1009 millibars (29.80").


Data from the Stepped Frequency Radiometer onboard the WP-3 research plane indicated that Gert has strenghend into a tropical storm.  It is the earliest a seventh tropical storm has formed in the recorded history of the Atlantic basin.  The previous record was August 7th and the average date is September 23.
