Colorado Water

The month of May turned out to be one of the driest on record, according to the Rocky Mountain News [June 3, 2004, "Drought relief dries up along with snow"]. From the article, "(Mike) Gillespie said this year's complete snow melt is expected to occur early this month throughout most of Colorado. If that's the case, the snow melt will be nearly a month earlier than in an average year. Moreover, Colorado's snowpack totals reached their top levels earlier in the winter than usual and were substantially less than the average peak accumulations, the conservation service, which is under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, reported. For instance, the conservation service noted that the snowpack for 2004 hit its maximum accumulation on March 8. Yet, at the time it was only at 78 percent of the average peak. In an average year Colorado does not reach the maximum snowpack until mid-April. Early April rain and snowstorms did give some relief from this year's drought, especially after 18 inches of snow fell on the foothills and caused a snowpack hike that reached 76 percent of average. Ultimately, however, it wasn't nearly enough."

Denver November 2004 Election

Govenor Bill Richardson of New Mexico has a political action committee and they've opened a Denver office to do voter registration and mobilization, according to the Denver Post [June 3, 2004, "Dems get boost from the south"]. From the article, "Joaquin Guerra, Denver director of Moving America Forward, said the group aims to register voters and to energize support for Democratic candidates...Colorado, with its young and fast-growing Latino population, has emerged as a battleground state in the presidential election. According to census figures, the Latino population grew from 424,302 in 1990 to 735,601 in 2000." Here's an article about the PAC from HispanicBusiness.com.

Bob Schaffer is taking a position to the right of Peter Coors assailing the brewer for his company's pro-gay policies, according to the Rocky Mountain News [June 3, 2004, "Straight eye for beer guy"]. From the article, "Schaffer's contention about a gay- friendly workplace is accurate, said Michael Brewer, public policy director of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Colorado. 'The company was the leader in a trend which has led to half of the Fortune 500 companies offering domestic-partnership benefits and even more, including sexual orientation in their employment non-discrimination policies.' That issue, however, is also the one in which Coors the candidate most clearly diverges from Coors the CEO. Pete Coors supports amending the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage."

20004 Presidential Election

President Bush was at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs yesterday [Denver Post, June 3, 2004, "AFA's gates scene of protest, rally"]. From the article, "Drivers rolling past a phalanx of protesters as they headed into the U.S. Air Force Academy on Wednesday often had one of two responses. Some slowed, tapped on the car horn and flashed a two-finger peace sign in support. Others let the horn wail and displayed a gesture with one fewer finger." Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [June 3, 2004, "Protesters prefer George of the Jungle"].

Here's a story about the President's visit to Colorado from the Denver Post [June 3, 2004, "Bush vows 'offensive'"]. From the article, "The speech appeared to preview his 'Greater Middle East Initiative' planned for discussion at the Group of Eight economic summit next week. The annual event brings together leaders of the world's eight major industrial democracies." Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [June 3, 2004, "We will defend peace"].

Here's the text of the President's speech yesterday at the Air Force Academy, from the Rocky Mountain News [June 3, 2004, "Text of Bush's address"].
