2004 Presidential Election

Taegan Goddard: "A new Democracy Corps survey shows Sen. John Kerry has a slight lead over President Bush 49% to 48%. Here are the latest state polls: Florida - Bush 48%, Kerry 38%, Nader 3% (Fox News); Michigan - Bush 42%, Kerry 40%, Nader 5% (Fox News); Ohio - Bush 45%, Kerry 41%, Nader 4% (Fox News); Pennsylvania - Bush 46%, Kerry 41%, Nader 3% (Fox News)."

Update: Wow, President Bush is running film footage of Hitler alongside of footage of John Kerry, Al Gore, and Dick Gephardt in an ad on his website. The Kerry campaign has called for them to remove the ad. I don't have a deep link to the ad so you have to go to the campaign website. I think the Hitler footage is from ads submitted to MoveOn.org, that were pulled by MoveOn, during their "Bush in 30 seconds" campaign earlier this year.

Colorado Water

The Forest Service has taken a position in support of a plan to protect 70 some miles of the South Platte River, according to the Rocky Mountain News [June 25, 2004, "Feds are on board with S. Platte plan"]. From the article, "The South Platte Protection Plan would place a 20-year moratorium on building an alternative to the Two Forks Dam project and require that certain water-flow levels be maintained. It also would permanently ban water projects in the Elevenmile and Cheesman canyons and create two monitoring groups to make sure the plan is implemented...The Forest Service doesn't have the authority to approve or require that the protection plan be implemented. Instead, it is a voluntary agreement that has been worked out among governments, water providers, and environmental groups on how the South Platte southwest of Denver will be managed and used. Under the agreement, water providers have six months to certify to the Forest Service that they will comply with the plan, including contributing to a $1 million endowment to fund restoration and recreation projects on the river. One of the provisions is that Denver Water and the Metropolitan Denver Water Authority will withdraw its water court application for a water storage project at the Two Forks site. But Denver Water officials say that doesn't mean the Two Forks project is banned altogether.

Denver November 2004 Election

Bob Schaffer thinks that it would be a good idea for Attorney General, Ken Salazar, to resign while running for the Senate, according to the Denver Post [June 25, 2004, "Schaffer demands Salazar resign"]. From the article, "'I will not resign,' Salazar said. 'I suppose I would say that if George W. Bush resigns from the presidency of the United States of America today, I would resign from attorney general as well. But if he can be out there campaigning full time, all the time, on Air Force One, I can be out campaigning with my money and my truck with 144,000 miles, and yet I continue to do my job in the attorney general's office.' Schaffer didn't call for Bush's resignation. Nor did he resign as a state legislator when in 1996 he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, although he said serving in the statehouse is a part-time job. In calling for Salazar's resignation, Schaffer claimed he was the front-runner in the Republican primary race with brewery executive Pete Coors. Voters will choose between Coors and Schaffer on Aug. 10. Cinamon Watson, spokeswoman for Coors, dismissed Schaffer's action as the "last gasp of a struggling campaign.'"

Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [June 25, 2004, "Schaffer on the attack"].

Mr. Schaffer is under scrutiny for claiming that he is a Bank Director when the bank has not been formed yet, according to the Rocky Mountain News. From the article, "Greenwood Bancorp is essentially a startup which is considering creating the Greenwood Federal Savings Bank, company officials said Thursday, and it hasn't applied for a federal bank charter yet." Ah, politics.
