2004 Presidential Election
Senator John Kerry will be in Denver on Monday. He will speak at a rally at Civic Center Park, at 3:00PM (they're letting people in starting at 1:00PM), according to the Denver Post [June 18, 2004, "Kerry plans campaign stop at Civic Center on Monday"].
Here's a short interview with Senator Kerry from the Rocky Mountain News [June 18, 2004, "Kerry out to carry Colorado"]. From the interview, when asked about oil and gas well exploration, "The answer is, we need to invest in renewable energy - wind and solar and new technologies. But we can also drill responsibly, and we will drill in places that have been leased appropriately, and I support that where it is appropriate. But I don't think you need to open environmentally sensitive public lands for that development, given the amount that we have already that is unused." On being born in Colorado, "I feel very connected to Colorado, and I always have. I've spent a lot of time out there ... I've enjoyed your mountains, I've been out there and had the privilege of skiing various locations, and I'll look forward to doing that again."
Meanwhile, Senator Kerry has set a Democratic fundraising record, collecting $100 million in the 3 months ending with May, according to the Denver Post [June 18, 2004, "Kerry raises $100 million in 3 months, a Dem record"]. From the article, "Kerry, a four-term Massachusetts senator, raised roughly $25 million in May alone, lifting his presidential campaign total to more than $140 million through the month, according to numbers provided by his campaign Wednesday. (President) Bush easily has outpaced Kerry, taking in at least $216 million for his re-election bid. Both Bush and Kerry declined to accept public funds for the primary season - and the accompanying limits on spending. Kerry has raised more than $44 million over the Internet since his Super Tuesday victories in early March, averaging $108 per online donor, and has also raised millions in $1,000 and $2,000 donations at fundraising events around the country."
