Colorado Water

San Diego Union Tribune: "When Bennett Raley was named the Bush administration's top water official, environmentalists who battled him for years feared the worst from the cowboy-turned-lawyer. Three years later, many environmentalists say Raley has been a surprise. He helped wrangle rival water agencies into signing a landmark Colorado River accord last year. And environmentalists cheered when ideas they had been urging for years turned up in a program aimed at helping cities face looming water shortages. The 47-year-old Coloradan has shown an ability to get along with people on all sides of an issue. It's a trait he'll need as Western states race to cope with one of the most severe droughts in modern times."

Denver November 2004 Election

Supporters of FasTracks are due to turn in petitions today to get the issue on the November ballot, according to the Denver Post [June 22, 2004, "FasTracks fans to submit petitions"]. From the article, "Today, volunteers plan to deliver the petitions by pulling rail-like carts loaded with signatures down the 16th Street Mall from Union Station to the Colorado secretary of state's office." Nice touch.

2004 Presidential Election

Coloradans braved the rainy weather to hear Senator John Kerry speak yesterday in Denver, according to the Denver Post [June 22, 2004, "Kerry makes a splash"]. From the article, "In his first campaign visit to Denver, Kerry called for renewed stem-cell research, saying more than 100 million Americans have illnesses or injuries that might be treated with stem-cell therapy. He said that as president, he would increase funding for federal agencies 'that promote critical research' and stop interference with the content of scientific reports...In their endorsement letter earlier Monday, 48 Nobel laureates accused the Bush administration of impeding medical advances by restricting stem-cell research, ignoring a scientific consensus on global warming and turning away critical scientific talent with inappropriate immigration practices. The Bush administration, which has restricted stem-cell research, disputed those claims and said it has increased funding for science." Here's a link to the text of Senator Kerry's speech and the link to a .pdf.

48 Nobel prize winning scientists endorsed John Kerry for president yesterday. Here's the text of the their letter to the American people, from the Denver Post [June 22, Kerry endorsement letter from Nobel Prize-winning scientists"]. From the letter, "The prosperity, health, environment, and security of Americans depend on Presidential leadership to sustain our vibrant science and technology; to encourage education at home and attract talented scientists and engineers from abroad; and to nurture a business environment that transforms new knowledge into new opportunities for creating quality jobs and reaching shared goals." Here's the letter in .pdf.

Here's another story about Senator Kerry's visit to Colorado from the Denver Post [June 22, 2004, "Bush, war issues occupy crowd"].

Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [June 22, 2004, "Rain, reign, go away"].

Update: Taegan Goddard: "An Investors Business Daily poll shows the presidential race 'still close and within the poll's margin of error.' President Bush leads Senator John Kerry 44% to 41%, with Ralph Nader getting 6%. In a two-way race, Bush and Kerry are tied at 44%. Here are the latest state polls: North Carolina: Bush 47%, Kerry 42% (Research 2000); Oregon: Kerry 44%, Bush 39% (Moore Information)."
