Denver November 2004 Election

Here's a story about Ken Salazar on the campaign trail, from the Rocky Mountain News [June 4, 2004, "Ken Salazar's pickup lines: Rural values, pragmatism"].

The Republican State Assembly is this weekend. Here's a story from the Denver Post [June 4, 2004, "Divided Colorado GOP to convene"]. From the article, "Now with Schaffer expected to win the top of the ticket after this weekend's state Republican convention, some members say Owens' sway in the party has waned, at least among the conservatives and activists who once propelled him to power. Meanwhile, experts question who's steering the party in its drive this November to retain holds on the U.S. Senate seat, several congressional districts and both houses of the Colorado legislature."

Coors the company is trying to make sure that their company policies are not confused with Peter Coors the candidate and his beliefs, according to the Rocky Mountain News [June 4, 2004, "Brewery disavows Coors' position"]. The article quotes a Grand Junction Republican, Carl Boydstun, as saying, "'I've seen what Coors did at the brewery with the pro-gay lobby, giving them health benefits.' As a result, said Boydstun, he'll vote for Schaffer." Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [June 4, 2004, "Brewery, Coors differ on gay-marriage ban"].

When Catholic Bishops meet in Denver from June 14-19, there will be a discussion of their role in U.S. Politics, according to the Denver Post [June 4, 2004, "Bishops to talk politics"]. From the article, "Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput and Colorado Springs Bishop Michael Sheridan adopted different tones in recent writings but agreed Catholic politicians who dissent on key issues should refrain from Communion. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger this week told U.S. bishops visiting Rome, including Chaput and Sheridan, to proceed with caution on denying Communion to Catholic politicians, the Catholic News Service reported. (Cardinal Theodore) McCarrick has voiced reluctance to use the Eucharist as a 'sanction' against politicians."

2004 Presidential Election

Political Wire: "New state polls."

Senator John Kerry will be in Colorado next week, according to the Rocky Mountain News [June 4, 2004, "Kerry visits next week, hoping to sway state"]. From the article, "Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry will campaign in Colorado next week in an attempt to sway the independent voters who call the shots. His visit, along with the TV ad money being spent by both Kerry's and President Bush's campaigns, attest to Colorado's status as a battleground state in the war for electoral votes. Kerry will arrive in Denver on Sunday and give a speech Monday, although details are still being worked out. He also is scheduled to visit Colorado again for a fund-raiser later this month."
