Denver November 2004 Election

Mike Miles is the subject of this story from the Rocky Mountain News [June 8, 2004, "Miles' support growing louder"]. From the article, "The 47-year-old father of three has a lot to say. On a day campaigning from Colorado Springs to Boulder and back, Miles expounds on the divisions in the Democratic Party, the difficulties of running an underfunded campaign and, of course, the performance of the Bush administration. Everything he says is peppered with a conviction that his supporters adore and political analysts generally dismiss: That a small-town educator, a first-time candidate - a little guy, if you will - can topple two party machines and win a U.S. Senate seat."

A divided U.S. Supreme Court decided not to take on the case of Colorado's midnight gerrymander from last spring, according to the Denver Post [June 8, 2004, "GOP gets hit again on remap"]. From the article, "The decision assures that voters and candidates will use the same congressional boundaries in November's elections as were used in 2002. Republicans asked the nation's highest court to hear the case in an attempt to win approval of a political map that favors more GOP candidates. Republican officials said Monday that they will continue the battle in a separate case pending in U.S. District Court, which could provide an alternative route to the U.S. Supreme Court." Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [June 8, 2004, "Justices decline redistricting case"].

2004 Presidential Election

John Kerry leads George Bush nationally, 44% to 42%, according to a recent Zogby International poll.

Check out the Wall Street Journal battleground states poll.

Meanwhile a recent Investor's Business Daily/TIPP poll shows President Bush leading Senator Kerry nationally, 44% to 42% with 7% going to Ralph Nader.

In Iowa John Kerry leads George Bush, 49% to 41%, according to Rasmussen Reports.

Thanks to Taegan Goddard for the links.

Update: Gallup News: "A new Gallup survey finds Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry enjoying a slight lead over President George W. Bush, while Bush's approval ratings remain relatively unchanged, but for the most part in negative territory. The president's continuing strength is in the public's perception of how well he is fighting the war on terrorism, while his performance ratings in other areas -- the economy, foreign affairs, the situation in Iraq, energy policy, and prescription drugs for older Americans -- all elicit higher disapproval than approval. The poll, conducted June 3-6, overlapped news of former President Ronald Reagan's death. Some of the results reported here could be affected by this news. The poll finds Kerry leading Bush in the presidential contest by 49% to 44% among registered voters, and 50% to 44% among likely voters."

Update: Freep/News/Michigan: "President Bush and his Democratic rival, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, remain locked in a close race in Michigan, a new poll shows. Forty-seven percent of the 600 likely Michigan voters polled by Lansing-based EPIC/MRA said they'd vote for Kerry if the election was held today, while 45 percent backed Bush, with 8 percent undecided. The numbers are identical to a late March poll conducted by EPIC/MRA. With independent Ralph Nader in the race, Kerry was supported by 45 percent, Bush by 43 percent, with 3 percent going to Nader and 9 percent undecided. Those numbers also mirror the March poll."

Update: Ralph writes in the comments, "WSJ Poll--Caution: This is a Zogby poll. According to Campaigns & Elections Zogby got more races wrong than any other pollster." Thanks for letting us know.
