2004 Presidential Election
President Bush's campaign has turned his website into a type of memorial to Ronald Reagan. This has to be a first in Internet politics. The Reagan page has a link through to the main website and the link to the President's weblog is still the same. I don't know how long the main link will keep pointing to the Reagan page so here's a link to a screen shot in .pdf.
Blogs for Bush has some comments on President Reagan's legacy here. Paul Krugman talks about a great strength of Mr. Reagan, his pragmatism. Krugman's column will scroll behind the NYT paywall soon. Taegan Goddard thinks that President Bush's campaign is attempting to ride the coattails of former President Reagan.
Juan Cole is calling the memo on prison tactics, released this week by the Wall Street Journal, Torturegate. Here's an analysis of the memo via TalkLeft.
Update: Taegan Goddard: "'Widespread unease over the country's direction and doubts about President Bush's policies on Iraq and the economy helped propel Sen. F. John Kerry to a solid lead among voters nationwide,' according to a Los Angeles Times Poll to be released Thursday. Kerry leads Bush 51% to 44% in a two-way match up, and by 48% to 42% with independent Ralph Nader included in the choice. "
Update: A Curious Stranger comments on the President's tribute to Ronald Reagan on the Bush/Cheney website.
Update: Rasmussen Reports: "Florida: Kerry 46% Bush 46%"
Update: Rasmussen Reports: "Massachusetts: Kerry 58% Bush 33%."
Update: Josh Marshall writes, about the Reagan tribute on the Bush/Cheney 2004 website, "Yes, it's crass and cynical. But it's also a tad desperate. And that's the more important point, I think. Having watched the Bush White House for some time and seen them try all manner of crude and crass political gambits, very few of them, in my recollection, haven't ended up biting them in the behind."
Update: Blogs for Bush: "While the country mourns the death of the great President Ronald Reagan, the George W. Bush campaign site has replaced it's main page with a tribute page. They have also created a living memorial for Reagan. A sincere and genuine tribute by the Bush campaign."
