News -- Study highlights how tax laws hurt small business owners more than
big businesses: http://www.sbam.org/resource/digest/features/050802.html
Comment -- Something the report could also have highlighted is the
difficulty of complying with our complex tax laws. When my wife started up
her small business, I was dismayed at how much of our financial affairs we
had to entrust to our CPA. Tax laws are so unfathomable that we had to rely
on a well-paid specialist. It does not seem right that two fairly well
educated people like my wife and I can't even begin to confidently decipher
the tax laws that applied to us.
News -- Detroit News column says we need more sensible drinking laws, not
more draconian ones:

Comment -- Paul Ruschmann writes that "the time has come to get smart
instead. This means passing laws that encourage responsible drinking. Young
adults should be allowed to drink in settings where abuse is less likely to
occur: in bars while accompanied by their parents; in restaurants; at
student unions and military bases; and, of course, at home. Maybe it is also
time to bring back "3.2" percent beer; millions of Americans once learned
how to handle alcohol by drinking it."
This certainly seems sensible to me. When I was in college, the drinking age
was 18, so it was no great act of teenage "rebellion" to have a couple
beers. But today, with the age at 21, you see those party animals at
Michigan State getting blitzed on keg beer and burning couches.
