News: We're back from our latest trip to the San Francisco area
Comment: We had great fun, as usual. Kudos to my daughter for putting up
with us (and being willing to take a week of vacation to hang out with us,
too.) If only we could afford a house out there...but housing seems to be at
least five times as expensive as it is in mid-Michigan. Census data shows
Michigan housing is more affordable than in most places (
http://www.detnews.com/2002/census/0206/04/a06-505774.htm
) in part
because of supply and demand. That is, if you could pick anywhere in the
country to live (assuming you have a job, your family is nearby, etc.) I
doubt that you would choose mid-Michigan (especially after you've suffered
through our nasty winters.) The Bay area. on the other hand, is desirable by
many and that bids up the price of housing.
News: Study in Detroit schools says girls lose interest in math as they move
up into high school:
http://www.detnews.com/2002/schools/0206/04/c01-505854.htm
Comment: The article blames parents for making girls think math is dorky. On
the flip side, I think that having teachers encourage girls is important.
Our daughter, who excelled in high level math in both high school and
college, told me that she never felt like her teachers treated the girls in
math classes any differently than the boys.
I wonder how girls do in math classes at all-girl schools, where presumably
there would be no peer pressure to act dumb in order to appeal to the boys?
