News: This is huge and genuinely historic -- the decision by the U.S.
Supreme Court to permit private school vouchers:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54620-2002Jun27.html
Comment: "The voucher ruling, with sweeping national consequences for
education policy, cleared the way for other cities and states to adopt
similar voucher programs, in which government money helps pay the tuition
bill at a religious or private school," says the Washington Post article.
The public school monopoly is going down. Years from now, people will look
back and say that the voucher decision was as important to our economy as
the deregulation of the airlines (dramatically lowering the cost of air
travel) and the breakup of the Bell telephone system (opening the way to the
Internet).
Finally, poor kids trapped in crummy school systems have a prayer of getting
out and having better lives. Hooray!
News: a loony federal court ruling that the words "under God" makes the
Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A55614-2002Jun27.html
Comment: Sure, as an intellectual exercise you could argue that
non-Christians and non-religious people might be offended by the words
"under God." However, I think the President had it right when he said "The
Almighty is, obviously, an important part of my life, but a very important
part of the life of our country. And that's why the ruling of the court was
out of step with the traditions and history of America."
99.99% of the people in this country have no problem with the Pledge and are
probably asking themselves why federal court judges are wasting their time
on issues like this.
